DANCERS STUDIO

I tell the students, in spite of all you have been told about you as a dancer and your ability, you are a dancer. In a dance class there are only dancers. This is a dance class.

Most students suffer from "I can’t dance" or "I’ve been told I can’t dance". These situations most often occur in narrowly defined styles of dance styles like fad dances and classical forms. What else could be the source of these thoughts and what is their relevance to the current situation? And what about the thought of you being a dancer, what criteria is this notion based on. Trust me. A dancer is merely someone who dances. The rest is a matter of style.

Your style as a dancer is defined by the following elements your; body shape, strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and control. The greater the development of these elements, the more adaptable to a fixed dance form like ballet or swing you will be. Also think of how your life might be different if you woke up in a spunky, flexible, strong, and well balanced in control coordinated body. But for starters, where you’re at is just fine.

"But I don’t look in the video, like I feel in my body". Remember dance is about feeling and moving video is about art and criticism. It takes work and time to resolve this disconnect, but then, the dancer is always working to bring the inside and the outside together in a harmonious way. So don’t loose sight of the rewards of moving in your style and the satisfaction this brings.
